Sometimes a painting begins with a simple question: who will be waiting for the catch this time?
This work is the third variation in a small series of seaside scenes I have painted over the years. In the previous two paintings, the loyal assistant waiting for the fisherwoman was a small dog. This time, however, the harbor clearly belongs to cats — demanding critics of the morning catch.
Three hopeful companions gather around the returning fisherwoman, each convinced that the fish in her hands is meant for them. Their curious poses and quiet patience add gentle humor to the scene, turning an ordinary coastal moment into a small story about expectation, instinct and everyday joy.
Painted with energetic palette-knife strokes and vibrant Mediterranean colors, the work captures sunlight, sea air and the relaxed rhythm of life in a harbor where even the smallest moment becomes a story.
And judging by the determined look of the cats, the fish may not remain in her hands for long.
